DJing might look like an easy job. Sometimes I hear stuff like:
Hey, what’s so difficult about playing some music out?
Here’s why it’s a bit more than hitting a venue and playing music like average Joe could do:
The above is the hidden part of my DJ job, not many people have an idea what that means. To be exact: it’s the most important part of the job because THIS IS WHAT MAKES YOU AN ARTIST under millions of DJ’s. Compare it to a painter, his colours, his brushes, his canvas and all that stuff. Then there’s his way of painting and this is the part when I’m going live.
Let’s be honest: Beatmixing is not the hardest part of playing live. You have a bit of a rhythmic feeling? Okay, I’ll teach you in less than 2 weeks. But do you have the right ears, the right feeling for ‘what comes next’? Can you feel the audience? Is your sound right, EQing and all that stuff? When should you change the style a bit or the tempo? And what about your ‘acting role’ whilst DJing, do you have a charismatic aura or do you behave or look like an idiot? Don’t get me wrong, I find it very important to be authentic, but LIVE you’re not bedroom DJing.
A good DJ needs to be reliable with playing times and dates, needs to take care about his technical equipment and all that stuff, needs to find HIS style and satisfy HIS fans everytime he’s playing … I could write an endless list of other aspects of successful DJing. Just wanted to give you a glimpse of the background of things.

Samstag, der 26. April ‘08 morgens und 8 Uhr irgendwas. Bin seit ner Weile nach 16 Stunden Arbeit zu Haus und habe das unendliche Glück die Wiederholung der (des) LIGHTWORKS zu hören. Grad läuft Deine Version von “Its gonna be a fine day” meinen Gehörgang herunter.
Das Orginal habe ich geliebt, zumindest bis ich Deine Version davon gehört habe. Nur göttlich. Nach gefühlten 60 Minuten Gänsehaut wird Dein Set stetig besser. Ich müsste schon längst schlafen, aber dann würde ich diese akustische Philharmonie verpassen. Hält mich gefangen wie ein Magnet.
Was wollt ich eigentlich sagen ……. lol ….
An sich nur bedanken für Deine göttlichen Sets, Die mich schon seit langem in himmlische Sphären gleiten lassen. Hört sich komisch an, ist aber so. Von Show zu Show steigerst Du Dich nur. Die Sets sind unbezahlbar ….

I’ll be honest here; haven’t been massively impressed with part 1 of this show so far. Until 170 mins that is; this track is niiiiice!
Think the thing is that progressive music, to me at least, seems to have been changing a lot for a few months now. The sort of tunes that came before that track mentioned above in this set don’t really appeal to me - they’re a bit ‘beepy’ and ‘minimal’ I guess. Not sure, I’m struggling to actually explain it, but anyone with this set downloaded (from friskySubscription of course) can see what I mean. The one at 170 mins is far more my sort of sound!
That’s no criticism to you Ingo, of all the sets played on frisky, it’s LIGHTWORKS that I love the most by far. I have my own little habit of adding an entry to the ID3 tag of the MP3 file for any tracks I find I like (see, so I can find them again at a later date, and your sets always have loads of those (see my screenshot below). I imagine you’ve got to include music you like, but also music you know other people will like, and it all comes down to personal preference and what sound moves each person. I have a rough idea what my sound is, it doesn’t mean the other stuff is wrong or bad.
I’m a pretty crap progressive fan really; I rarely have any idea of waht’s going on in the genre, I just know I like the music. Would be good actually if someone could explain why, how and in what way progressive has been changing over the past 6 months, or year, or even few years. I first started listening to this stuff back in…end of 2004, and the stuff then sounds very different to the stuff now. All genres evolve and change of course, I just wonder what the influences are.
I suppose in a way I’m just trying to keep hold of the ’style’ of progressive that I first heard way back then, but it seems to be slipping away…
I still hear plenty of good prog though, in shows like LIGHTWORKS (of course), 6th Auditorium, Deepest Level, Mindfields, Sol Solar, so I know it’s out there! All credit to the guys who bring that music to us - the producers and the DJs - because I’d never get to hear so many amazing tracks if it weren’t for them.

I’m proud to have a very special guest for my next LIGHTWORKS show, a DJane (female DJ) from Lebanon who currently resides in Paris/France. Attention: This show will be 10 hours long! BeeBux plays 2 hours between my 2 x 4 hours. 
BeeBux grew up in Beirut, Lebanon surrounded by music. Her career started through Rock and Metal music in cover bands on guitar and bass, then on percussions.
Mostly influenced by Pink Floyd, Radiohead and Massive Attack, she discovered electronic music in 1997 in France where she currently resides. But it wasn’t until early 2006 that she decided to begin DJ’ing. She didn’t hesitate to blend in her oriental roots onto progressively bassed house music while experimenting many other genres in her mixing journeys.
In parallel to that BeeBux started her EM productions and is still faithfull to being a musician by working along French artists in the capital.
“Down on Earth” shimmers with mellow dreamscapes, deep tranquile moods and diaphanously appearing tunes out of distant places. The music acts as a travel guide through your senses and sensuousnes. Centrozoon’s Bernhard Wöstheinrich’s impressive solo-debut from 1998 (containing tracks from 1996 til 1998) should appeal to many fans of challenging contemporary ambient music.

The South African DJ, Richard Palmer discovered dance music in the early ’90, which was just an extension for his love for music in general.
In 2000 Richard came across the Cape Town Outdoor Psytrance scene and after a trip to Germany in 2002 where he went to a number of Outdoor Progressive trance parties, he started collecting and playing this music. Only a small number of DJ’s were playing Prog in S.A. at the time.
“The sound made such a big impact on me, that when I got back to S.A. and no one was playing Prog, I just felt compelled to learn how to mix and bring this sound to larger audiences. I see myself more as a music promoter than a DJ� says Richard who regularly plays at the summer Outdoor parties in and around Cape Town.
“Nowadays Prog House and Prog Trance are so similar, and where they merge is the sound I most like. My biggest influences in the genre are Atmos, Antix, D-Nox & Beckers, Son Kite, Freq and Liquid Soul. Human Traffic are also defiantly an act to keep an ear open for. 50 Cent: Karriereaus wegen Kanye West?
Ich kenne kaum ein Musikgenre, in dem so derart gegeneinander gearbeitet wird, wie Hip Hop / Rap. Das Destruktive hört man in dieser Musik auch raus. Es geht entweder um Titten, Geld oder Statussymbole, manchmal - aus Versehen - auch um “Liebe”. Zudem ist das ein Genre, dem ich in meinem Leben noch so gut wie nie wirklich was abgewinnen konnte. Zu aufgeplustert, zu “Gangsta”-mässig (was das soll, erschließt sich mir einfach nicht). Die Videos fast immer dasselbe: Titten Geld, Statussymbole.
Die alberne Kleidung, T-Shirts in denen der Träger 3 mal reinpasst, genauso die Hosen, deren Gesäßtaschen an den Fußknöcheln hängen … ich habe ja überhaupt nichts gegen Modetrends, mein Gott, wer’s braucht? Aber dann noch diese Goldketten, Uhren, schiefen Baseball Caps, manchmal auch irgendwelche Putzlumpen um den Kopp gewickelt. Sorry, da hört’s bei mir auf. Getoppt wird das nur noch durch Brilliantzähne und dieses dämliche Gepose zu der Musik, bei dem die Leute immer mit zwei abgespreizten Fingern Hey-Yo-artig wild herumfuchteln und dabei Sprechgesang vorführen.
Das ist natürlich nicht rassistisch gemeint, denn ich finde das bei weissen, gelben, grünen, blauen Rappern genauso beknackt.
Ich will nicht abstreiten, das es unter 1.000 Songs da mal ein, zwei gute gibt, die sogar mir irgendwie gefallen, meist wegen der instrumentalischen Aspekte. Aber gesamtheitlich gesehen finde ich Hip Hop / Rap ziemlich überflüssig. Versaut auch nur unsere Jugend, die das alles in den falschen Hals kriegt. Die glauben dann, Titten, Geld und Statussymbole ist das Wichtigste auf der Welt. Wird ja auch 24 Stunden auf MTV und Viva suggeriert.
Aber so lange der Rubel rollt …
Ich bin gespannt, wann mal wieder adulte, elektronische (Tanz)musik Einzug in die Radios und Musiksender findet. Die 90-er Technowelle hatte einen entscheidenden Vorteil: Underground wurde auf einmal Surface. Das hat der Musikkultur sehr gut getan. Schwarze Schäfchen gab es da natürlich auch, aber die haben sich auf längere Sicht selbst erledigt.
Wenn Techno einen Wert vermittelt hat, dann: Lebensfreude. Kann ich bei “Black Music” nicht erkennen. Die ist einfach Black. Man kann auf Techno herumhacken, wie man will, aber die Menschen waren friedlich, hatten Lebensfreude und waren keine Kriminellen. Na ja, bis auf die Einnahme nicht legaler Psychopharmaka … 
aber das machen die Rapper mindestens genauso viel.
